A WEBP file is an image saved in the WebP (pronounced "Weppy") raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It is designed to reduce image file sizes over standard JPEG compression while maintaining the same or similar quality. WEBP files allow images to be downloaded more quickly.
WEBP file open in Google Chrome 60
WEBP files are typically created when a Chrome user downloads an image from the web browser by dragging and dropping it on the desktop or right-clicking the image and saving it in the WebP format. If you come across a WEBP file you can open it in the Chrome or Opera web browsers or with a graphics editor, such as Pixelmator, Image Magick, IrfanView, or XnView.
The WebP format is based on On2 Technologies technology that was acquired by Google. The format was introduced in 2010.
NOTE: The WebP Codec for Windows plugin listed below enables Microsoft Windows Photo Viewer to open WEBP files.
