What is an .SPARSIMAGE file?

The SPARSIMAGE file extension is used for so called sparse images in Mac OS X operating system. These files are created by the Disk Utility.

Unlike a full DMG image, which takes up as much actual space as the real disk it represents (regardless of the amount of unused space), a SPARSEIMAGE takes up only as much actual disk space as the data contained within, up to a maximum of the capacity assigned during creating

How to open:

You can work with these files in Apple Mac OS X Disk Utility.

How to convert:

As far as we know, this .sparsimage file type can't be converted to any other file format. This is usually the case of system, configuration, temporary, or data files containing data exclusive to only one software and used for its own purposes. Also some proprietary or closed file formats cannot be converted to more common file types in order to protect the intellectual property of the developer, which is for example the case of some DRM-protected multimedia files.
