What is an .ASEC file?

The asec file extension is associated with the Google Android operating system. Android from version 2.2 Froyo supports installation of applications to memory card. Applications moved to memory card are encrypted and use ASEC file extension. ASEC files can be found in .android_secure folder saved on memory card.

Applications stored in ASEC encrypted file format cannot be modified by other applications installed in phone, or computer. Applications installed on SD card are paired with Android phone, where they have been installed. It is not possible to put SD card to other Android phone and run applications installed on SD card.

Only Android SDK Emulator that is a part of Android SDK Tools is able to run applications installed on SD card in ASEC encrypted format, if the Android phone with SD card is connected to the computer.

If you move application back from SD card to phone's local storage, Android also decrypted ASEC package file to standard APK application package.

An asec file extension is used for Android encrypted application packages. ASEC file format was introduced in Android 2.2 that is able to move applications on SD card installed in Android phone. Applications stored on SD Card use ASEC encryption as a prevent against modifying and corruption. ASEC encrypted applications can be run only on Android phone, where have been installed, or in Android SDK emulator. If you move application back from SD card to phone's local storage, Android decrypted the ASEC application file to standard APK application package.

How to open:

Android applications installed on SD card in ASEC file format can be run only on Android phone, where they have been installed, or in Android SDK Emulator, if you have connected Android Phone that contains SD card with applications to computer.

How to convert:

The only format to which ASEC packages can be converted is APK android app packages.

How to solve problems with ASEC files

Associate the ASEC file extension with the correct application. On :
Windows: Right click on any ASEC file and then click "Open with" > "Choose another app". Now select another program and check the box "Always use this app to open *.ASEC files". Mac: Right click (or Ctrl-click) the ASEC file, then click "Open with" > "Other...". Then choose another program and check the "Always Open With" box. Linux: Right click on the file, and select "Open with" and choose another program. iPhone: Tap the file. If you do not see an app to open the file, then tap Share "Share" and choose an app. Alternatively, save the file. Then open the Files app Files app. There long-press on the file, then release your finger. You will see a black menu bar. Then tap "Share" and select an app. Android: Tap the Settings icon on your smartphone, then tap on the Apps section. There tap the Options icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to change the default apps.
Update your software that should actually open .ASEC is Android Secure Application File. Because only the current version supports the latest ASEC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Google manufacturer website after an available .ASEC is Android Secure Application File update.
To make sure that your ASEC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with antivirus software.
